Your Cover Is Working Hard — Help It Last
A quality hot tub cover is exposed to UV rays, rain, snow, and steam every single day. With a little regular maintenance, you can significantly extend its lifespan and keep it insulating effectively. Here's what we recommend at The Cover Factory.
1. Clean the Vinyl Surface Regularly
Wipe down the top of your cover every 1–2 months with a mild soap and water solution. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or petroleum-based cleaners — these degrade the vinyl and cause cracking.
For stubborn stains or mildew, use a dedicated hot tub cover cleaner available at most spa supply stores.
2. Condition the Vinyl
After cleaning, apply a UV-protectant vinyl conditioner to the top surface. This prevents the vinyl from drying out, cracking, and fading from sun exposure. Do this every 1–3 months depending on your climate and sun exposure.
Avoid silicone-based products — they can make the surface slippery and attract dirt.
3. Keep the Underside Clean
The underside of your cover is exposed to steam and chemicals from your hot tub water. Rinse it occasionally with clean water and let it air dry. Check for any signs of mould or mildew and treat promptly.
4. Remove Snow and Ice Carefully
Heavy snow loads can stress the cover's hinge and foam core. Use a soft broom or foam brush to gently sweep snow off — never use a metal shovel or sharp tools that could puncture the vinyl.
If ice has formed on the cover, let it melt naturally or use warm water. Never pry ice off forcefully.
5. Use a Cover Lifter
Repeatedly dragging your cover off the tub is one of the fastest ways to damage the hinge and vinyl. A cover lifter makes removal easy and protects the cover from scraping against the cabinet. It's one of the best accessories you can add to your setup.
6. Monitor Your Water Chemistry
High chlorine or bromine levels, or an imbalanced pH, accelerate foam degradation from the inside out. Keep your water chemistry balanced and ensure your cover is on when shocking the water — but leave it slightly ajar for 15–20 minutes afterward to let gases escape.
7. Know When It's Time to Replace
Even with great care, covers don't last forever. Signs it's time for a replacement include:
- The cover feels significantly heavier than when new (waterlogged foam)
- Visible cracks, tears, or peeling vinyl
- The hinge is broken or the cover no longer seals flat
- Your energy bills have increased noticeably
