Why Accurate Measurements Matter
A custom hot tub cover is only as good as the measurements behind it. An ill-fitting cover lets heat escape, drives up energy costs, and can even allow debris and moisture to get in. At The Cover Factory, every cover we make is built to your exact specifications — so getting your measurements right is the most important step.
What You'll Need
- A metal measuring tape (cloth tapes can stretch and give inaccurate readings)
- A notepad and pen
- A helper (optional but useful for larger tubs)
Step 1: Measure the Length and Width
Measure the outside edge to outside edge of your hot tub shell — not the cabinet or skirt. Take measurements at the widest points. Record both the length and width in inches.
Tip: Measure twice to confirm accuracy.
Step 2: Measure the Corner Radius
Most hot tubs have rounded corners. To measure the radius, place a straight edge along one side of the tub and another along the adjacent side. Measure the distance from the corner of the straight edges to the curve of the tub — that's your corner radius.
Common corner radii are 3", 4", 5", 6", and 8". If your corners are square (90°), note that as well.
Step 3: Identify the Fold Direction
Custom covers fold in half for easy removal. You'll need to specify whether the cover folds on the length (front-to-back) or the width (side-to-side). Think about where you'll be lifting the cover off — the fold should open toward the most accessible side.
Step 4: Note Any Cutouts or Obstructions
Some hot tubs have headrests, pillows, or equipment that protrude above the rim. Measure the location and size of any cutouts needed so your cover fits flush.
Step 5: Check Your Spa Brand's Fit Guide
If you own a popular spa brand, we may already have standard dimensions on file.
